After laying empty for a number of years, it was purchased from the Council and renovated. In 1999, the property was bought by the footballer David Beckham and his spouse Victoria for £2.5 million. The property grew to become dubbed “Beckingham Palace” by the press as a portmanteau of their surname and Buckingham Palace. They spent round £three million on refurbishment, together with a maze designed by James Gardner, in the grounds. In 2001, Victoria Beckham made a virtual tour of the mansion obtainable on-line.
In one, an unidentified acquaintance refuted these superstitious accusations, stating that they have been nonsense and that Winchester was an unusually sensible girl. They described Winchester as clearheaded and savvier with funds and enterprise than most males. The house grew to become a vacationer attraction nine months after Winchester’s demise in 1922. The house was in disrepair and regarded to be of no monetary value. A group of investors purchased the property subsequently leasing the home to John and Mayme Brown who turned it into an attraction.
In 1924 Harry Houdini briefly visited the home and was reportedly impressed by its unusual layout and architectural novelties, however couldn’t make a detailed investigation due to extra urgent engagements. According to some accounts, Houdini suggested tour operators make use of “Winchester thriller house” as a promotional name for the property.
